Calgary Solar Solutions for Homeowners

Can solar systems over 10 kw apply for the Greener Homes Loan?

If you’re a Calgary homeowner researching solar energy, you’ve likely come across the Canada Greener Homes Loan — a government-backed interest-free loan of up to $40,000 designed to help Canadians upgrade their homes with energy-efficient solutions like solar panels.

But if your proposed solar PV system is larger than 10 kW, you may have run into a confusing message in the online application portal that says:

“The PV system capacity must be a minimum of 1.0 kW and a maximum of 10.0 kW.”

This wording has caused many homeowners in Alberta to believe they are not eligible for solar financing through the Greener Homes Loan if their system exceeds 10 kW.

Let me clarify — you can still apply for the loan even if your solar system is over 10 kW.

Systems Over 10 kW Are Eligible — Here’s How It Works

As a local Calgary solar consultant with SkyFire Energy, I’ve personally contacted representatives from the Greener Homes Loan program to confirm the process. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • During the application process, you’ll be asked to input your solar system size.
  • Even if your system is larger than 10 kW, simply enter “10.0 kW” to proceed.
  • Your actual system size and full quote will be evaluated later by an underwriter based on the total loan amount you’re applying for.
  • The loan program focuses on the dollar value of your project (up to $40,000), not just the kW size.

So, if you’re planning a 12 kW, 15 kW, or even larger solar system in Calgary, you’re still eligible for this interest-free loan.

What to Do If You’re Applying for the Greener Homes Loan

If you’re working with a solar installer (like me), here’s what I recommend:

  1. Get a detailed solar quote for your home, including system size and cost.
  2. Have a pre-retrofit evaluation performed and an energy advisor.
  3. Begin your Greener Homes Loan application online.
  4. When asked about PV system capacity, enter “10.0 kW” (even if your system is larger).
  5. Upload your full quote showing your actual system size and cost.
  6. Your application will be evaluated based on the total dollar amount of your project, not the stated kW.

Feedback Has Been Shared with the Program

I’ve already shared feedback with the Greener Homes Loan team, asking that they update the application wording to reduce confusion for homeowners installing larger systems. In the meantime, rest assured that your larger residential solar project in Calgary is still eligible for the program.
