Does Snow Affect Solar Panels in Calgary? What Alberta Homeowners Need to Know

This is one of the most common questions I get from homeowners exploring solar with SkyFire Energy: “Do solar panels still work in the winter?” With our long, snowy winters here in Calgary, it’s a fair concern.

But the truth is, the impact of snow on solar energy production in Alberta is smaller than most people think.

What the Research Says About Solar and Snow in Alberta

A landmark five-year study conducted by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton set out to quantify just how much snow affects the performance of residential solar panels.

In the study, NAIT installed two identical solar arrays side by side, across various roof pitches. One array was cleared of snow regularly, while the other was left completely untouched through the entire winter season.

The results were surprising:
Across most roof angles, the total production loss due to snow buildup was only about 4%. That’s right—just a 4% decrease in output over the winter months, even with heavy snowfall and long periods of snow cover.

Why Roof Angle Matters More Than Snow

The most important takeaway from the NAIT snow study wasn’t just that solar works in winter—it’s that module tilt (roof pitch) has a much greater impact on winter performance than snow itself.

Panels mounted at steeper angles, such as 45–53 degrees, shed snow much faster and consistently outperformed systems on shallower slopes. Shallow-pitched roofs retain snow longer, reducing short-term winter generation, but the overall impact is still relatively minor.

NAIT identified 53 degrees as the optimal tilt angle for Edmonton’s climate, striking the best balance between year-round production and effective snow shedding. The same principle applies in Calgary, given our similar latitude and climate conditions.

Calgary’s Winter Sun Advantage

Even with snow, Calgary is one of the best places in Canada for solar energy generation. Here’s why:

  • High number of sunny days year-round
  • Cold temperatures improve solar panel efficiency
  • Snow tends to slide off panels easily on steeper roofs
  • Long summer days offset lower winter production

In short, your solar panels don’t need to be snow-free every day to perform well. They’ll catch up quickly on clear, sunny days, especially after a snowfall melts or slides off.

Should You Clear Snow Off Your Panels?

For most residential systems, manually clearing snow isn’t necessary and may even be unsafe. The gain in winter production often doesn’t justify the risk of climbing on a snowy roof and the risk of damaging your system.

That said, if your panels are easily accessible (like on a ground mount or garage), occasional snow removal may boost your winter output slightly—but it’s not essential for good annual performance.

Final Thoughts: Yes, Solar Works in Calgary—Even in Winter

Snow is part of life in Calgary, but it’s not a reason to avoid solar. The data shows that solar panels continue to produce energy effectively all year long, and the small loss in winter is more than made up for in Alberta’s bright spring and summer months.
